Set Course in Running Data Field

Hi,

I have made a course just to know where I want to run. I am inside of the running activity and I have set one of the data fields to be course. I don't know how I can set the course that I have made to be displayed there. I DON'T want to "do course" i just want it to be displayed there. I have downloaded it to my watch and I can see it, but don't know how to set it there. Plz look at the images I have inserted here:

  • Well, yu can start the Course

I DON'T want to "do course" i just want it to be displayed there.

Why? That's the way you normally use for exactly the purpose you described.

  • The Course Data Field =

"The direction from your starting location to a destination. Course can be viewed as a planned or set route.  You must be navigating for this data to appear." /

I don't think you can display the name during an activity.  You can review the appendix in the operator's manual for the definitions of the data fields.

  • the "You must be navigating" is a bit ambiguous. Does "navigating" mean using Navigation app and this and no other app/activity only? Because technically I can be navigating in any activity via a data field (except that I can which is what I've just learned), that's what I believe the above question is about.

Or to put it differently: why would the watch allow you to use custom data fields for an activity for which the field makes no sense/use in the first place?

Case in point: I start by copying e.g. Hiking. Now I'd like to expand the data screens and while browsing the options I stumble upon navigation fields. Distance to destination, Vertical distance to dest., ..but they all sound too good to be true, because as I've just learned they are all useless as they work only inside the Navigation app.

  • You can use navigation within any of the GPS activities.  Using your example, I can use the Hiking activity (app as you describe) and navigate.  To use the navigation features during the hike, you can select the Hike activity, then select the options with the up/menu button and chose Navigation to select a course or saved location.  If you have already started recording/tracking your hike, a long press of the up/menu button brings up the hike sub-menu and you can select navigation options.  Now the navigation fields will fill

The Navigation activity is just another activity (similar to Hike) that you can select and record a GPS track.  The terminology can be a little confusing.

  • Or to put it differently: why would the watch allow you to use custom data fields for an activity for which the field makes no sense/use in the first place?

I may not correctly understand what the problem is. You can indeed start the navigation from within any outdoor activity, and you can add custom navigation fields to the screens of that concerned activity profile. It works all right. I just tested it again, to make sure it did not change since the last time I tried, and it sitll works fine. What problem exactly do you experience when adding custom navigation fields to the activity screens?

  • Ho,

no problem, now I know you can do it and how to do it thanks to the kind answers you and D_Estes provided.

    That solves it for me.

    Thank you!!
