Unable to connect to PC

Hello, does anyone else have a problem connecting their Instinct to their PC? I cannot get the Instinct to show on either my laptop or desktop PC. I have tried reinstalling Garmin Express, different cables, restarting PC's & Instinct, forcing computer to 'see' the Instinct as a mass storage device - nothing works. i have tried everything I can and trawled the internet to no avail. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you all.

  • On your Instinct, long-press the menu button, scroll down to Settings » System » USB Mode, and change it to Mass Storage, if it is not in that mode

  • Hi trux, checked that and it was already in that. I changed it to Garmin Mode and no different. I've switched off Bluetooth on all phones and tablets to make sure there's no interface.  I'm totally stumped.

  • Does the PC make the connection sound, when you plug in the watch? You could also check the Device Manager to see whether there is any unknown device connected on the USB. Or try it with another computer. Or just reboot yours, sometimes the USB interface stops working correctly. Also try different USB ports - I have already seen that device cannot be connected through the original port, but starts working on another one.

  • Hi trux, no there's no connection sound. I've checked the Device Manager and all look ok there. I have tried it on both my desktop PC and laptop as well and tried it on all USB ports including the rear of the desktop. I've tried rebooting both PC's and Instinct....still no luck.

  • I've checked the Device Manager and all look ok there.

Do you mean you can see the Garmin device there? Or just that there is no unknown device listed?

My Instinct il listed minimally three times in the Device Manager: under Disk Drives, under Portable Devices, and under USB Controllers:

Make a screenshot of the devices under USB controllers (or just count them) when Instinct is not connected, then plug it in, wait a minute (sometimes it is pretty long to register fully). Check whether any new device was added. The list of devices in the Device Manager visibly reloads several times, each time you plug the watch in or out. If you can't see any reloading in the Device Manager, then there is likely a  problem with the cable, the connectors, or perhpas the watch. The most likely though is the connector on the watch or on the cable - try cleaning it carefully with medical alcohol (do not use any dissolvant like aceton, and similar!) and a piece of cotton, or a tissue. As the connection to the watch is symetrical, try both senses. If you have the possibility to get another cable (i.e. from a friend), try with it.
