Garmin Instinct - Text Response

Garmin Instinct will respond to calls with text but will not reapond to incoming texts. Using Samsung Galaxy. Any help appreciated.

  • Within the Connect app settings, make sure that you've enabled smart notifications for your phone messaging app.

    Thank you for the response. I have checked and have smart notifications on. 

    I can receive texts and calls. I can dismiss texts and calls. I can respond to calls. But when I select respond to text, the watch returns to the watchface screen.

  • Hey, we came across the same problem with Xiaomi phone. Were you able to sort it out? Response to calls or other apps is okay, only text messages don’t work.

  • So you are receiving the notifications on your Instinct for both calls and SMS, but can answer by an SMS through the watch the phone calls only? If it is that case, then my first guess would be that you do not have at least two predefined responses activated in GA Mobile » Device settings » Text Responses » Respond to Messages. Please note, that you indeed have to have at leat two answers active. For some reason it won't work with a single predefined anser.

  • I can receive all notifications (calls, texts, 3rd party apps) and can respond with predefined custom messages to calls or third party apps like fb messenger. When a text pops in and you choose to respond it gets you back on the watchface. Just like the OP said. And yes, there is more than one answer. It doesn’t let you to choose one of the answers, just returns back to the main screen.

    I am getting even more confused by your answer. In the first post you wrote SMS responses to calls and other apps are okay, only SMS responses to text messages don't work. Now you seem to be telling that the SMS responses do not work for any of the notifications.

    First of all, as far as I know, Garmin Instinct has only two types of SMS responses - to calls and to text messages (SMS). I am not aware about any responses beeing available for other apps. Notifications yes, but no responses, to my best knowledge. So if you are trying to do that, it won't work.

    Otherwise, if the SMS responses work neither for calls, nor for texts, you should check the permissions for sending SMS in GC Settings » Phone Permissions

  • Okay. Again. All notifications are working - calls, sms and emails and other apps notifications are coming through no problem.

    I CAN respond with sms to a call. It’s working.

    I CAN even respond with predefined messages to a Facebook Messenger notification.

    But when an SMS comes, I can only view the notification, but when you choose the ‘Respond’ option, it takes you to the watchface instead of the predefined responses.

    Is it clear now?

    I never got a resolution. Talked with Garmin over phone. They recommended making sure watch and app was up to date and, I believe (been a while), doing a reset of the watch. Didnt work. Unforetunately for you, I updated my phone and the text response started working. No idea exactly what the problem was.
