Using a Workout cancels miles alert

So I went for a morning run yesterday and tried a simple Workout that was a Warmup - Run - Cooldown. I selected "Run" and then selected the Workout and pressed start. Walked to warmup and then pressed the Lap button and started running and pressed Lap again after running to cool down. Not once during any part of the activity did I get a mile vibration or alert.

I went for a walk this morning, using the Walk activity, and got alerted for each mile... So, does using a Workout cancel the distance alert I have setup?

  • The short answer should be no.

Assuming there is no bug I would suggest 2 possibilities for the behavior you describe:

    - maybe you have enabled the autolap feature in "Walk" activity but not for the "Run" activity. The autolap is specific to each activity: you can enable/disable it, set the distance or the data displayed in different ways for every activity.

    - when doing a workout the auto-lap count the distance not from the beginning of your activity but from the beginning of each phase of your workout. So if your warm up and all your intervals were shorter than one mile,  the auto lap will never trigger a new lap.

I did another activity since then and it worked. I have never had auto-lap enabled. The activity when it didn't work was a mile warmup (walk), run 8 miles and cool-down a mile (walk), all without the usual vibration/notification I've always enjoyed.

When I get a chance I'll try it again on a short run...
