Possibility of an Instinct refresh in a year or two?

Just wondering if we'll see an updated / higher-tier Instinct at any point? From what I can see (prices increasing over time & new colour variations) they seem to be selling particularly well. Personally I don't want a smart watch with a large, colour screen; when I want to look at data I'll use my phone/computer, the watch is there to log the data and get information to me in a basic manner, which the Instinct does. I love that the watch blends in and just has the appearance of a simple g-shock to most people, whilst in the meantime having all the hardware inside (Plus the upsides of the bulletproof build and huge battery life).

The Instinct is missing a plethora of features though, some of which were absent at launch and others which have been developed since release:

  • New Sony chipset
  • Updated heart rate monitor
  • Pulse ox
  • Training load
  • Firstbeat metrics
  • Incident detection
  • Garmin pay
  • Spotify / music onboard
  • Probably some new features that'll be found on the Fenix 6...
  • Others that I've probably forgotten

I know there's some features which aren't feasible with the monochrome screen (e.g. topographic maps), which I guess could be used to differentiate it from the top-end watches. Given all this tech is already developed and in other watches, I doubt it'd be too difficult to pack it into a large chassis like the Instinct already has.

Wondering if anyone else would be interested in something like this or people find the current-gen more than sufficient?

  • You’re asking for features that will drastically increase the cost of this watch. The idea behind the Instinct is to NOT compete with the Fenix lineup. The next version of the Instinct will come out around Oct ‘20 and will probably be at the price point of $325 or so since prices never go down.

I'd argue they'd be sufficiently different  - The new 945 forerunner has all of these features and some more. I'm not well enough in the loop, but I can't imagine the Fenix 6 will have that much to set it apart from the 945 later this year/early 2020? Aside from the 945 being a 'running' watch and the Fenix being an 'outdoors' watch.

I agree on the price going up but I'd pay it. Maybe I'm crazy for wanting to drop £350+ on a plastic, monochrome watch. I just love the idea of having 100% of the available tech in a bulletproof package. The amount of stories I've heard of people scratching / cracking fenix's scares me

I find the GPS and heart rate monitor to work great already.... those other features you mention are on 'other' watches meant more for running/biking....

I hope they do continue this series, but, it doesn't need much more added overall for my taste.

  • I have both Instinct Tactical and 6x Pro Solar and would very much like to have the above mentioned features on the Instinct as well as I wear my Instinct for work so music/pay/pulseox etc would be very welcomed and I don’t mind to pay extra to get a “Pro” version.

Totally agree, the Instinct provides great data, with no need to charge regularly.  My wife borrowed my old Fenix 5s plus, ifthasn't returned from her wrist yet. I would be interested in the price of the Instinct 2, failing that I will revert back to the Suunto 9, which has even better battery life

  • As mentioned above, the Instinct isn't meant to compete with the Fenix line, so further smart, training and first beat features are unlikely.

What will eventually land, are newer things from the modular system and Garmin's own software: new HRM with Pusle Ox, incident detection, Sony Chipset, pilates activity. Perhaps Firstbeat sleep detection if Garmin begins using that on its devices. I'd love to see native power!

  • In my opinion, the Instinct has been very successful.  That being said, I believe this line will be continued and upgraded.  It surely won't have all the features of the Fenix line, but newer features would have to be added to attract prospective buyers.

  • The Instinct 2 will be out sooner than later. Solar and PulseOX will be included with this version, at a cost I’m sure.
