Hike or Navigate?

What do people use when going walking (hiking) and what are the pros and cons of each? If I am using a gpx track, I could use either. The screens would be different although both will track me. Maybe one will use battery faster, maybe be better at certain metrics or produce more useful data? Thoughts anyone?

  • When hiking I use the Hiking activity which tracks my progress.  I use a app on my phone for navigation.  I don't really see the Instinct as a worthy wilderness navigation device.  The Hiking activity will leave a "breadcrumb" track and this could be useful in a pinch, but for dependable wilderness navigation you need topos.  I have used Instinct's navigation feature for cycling to get turn-by-turn prompts and it was very useful.  However, it did use up a good amount of battery over a 70 mile cycle.

  • Hi

how do you get turn by turn?  Not working on my instinct. Can only se a map. Worked great ob fenix 3 and 5.

  • I should have put "turn-by-turn" in quotes as the Instinct provides on-course off-course alerts if you are following a course.

  • Thank you, this is useful I have done a long hike recently and found that using Hiking is useful (if not just for the hike data after the event) but it's easy at any time during the hike to start navigating using a pre-loaded course. These courses could of course be short, difficult or critical stages or the whole intended route. Choosing hike also means that if you decide to change plans, you can walk away from the original course but still hae the breadcrumb and other data.
