I can sometimes get a notification when I;m using Google Maps on my phone. It's really hit and miss though. I still can't figure out exactly what is needed to get the notification regularly.
I did not mean google maps. I meant when i do a course that i created on garmin connect
Usually it’s when you have a route running in your phone (Google Maps) and then you turn the screen off on your phone.
The closest you can get to turn-by-turn navigation with the Instinct is to manually add waypoints to your course in Garmin Connect and name them with the direction you need to turn. E.g. "L Sandhills" to indicate you should turn left on Sandhills road. Then you configure the data screens on the Instinct's navigation to show "waypoint next" and "distance to next". So at a glance you can see that you need to turn left on Sandhills in 3.43 km, for example.
It's a lot of manual work but it gets the job done. The only thing to watch out for is if you're off course when you cross a waypoint it will ask you to backtrack to it and it messes up the navigation until you stop and restart navigation. Hopefully Garmin adds a feature to configure the sensitivity of the "off course" alert, but currently you frequently go off course even if you're following it exactly.
