Instinct Calories Not Updated After Editing Workout

Hi,

I did 1 set of push ups and my watch counted 21 reps (20 in reality) and counted 1 calorie. After this I edited my reps to 50 push ups to see if the information got updated. It didn't, still 1 calorie. Why is that? Do you have to change your reps on the watch itself before ending the workout if you want calories to be counted accurate?

Calories are counted by your HR, weight, activity class, etc for the duration of the exercise. If you did 20 reps and it calculated 1 calorie during that time period, it doesn't matter how many reps you change it too, the calories burned will be the same.

Yeah okay, but if you did 50 reps in a specific time, you burn more calories than if you did 20. At least the double amount, right?
  • Not if your heart rate stays the same.

Yeah okay, now I understand thx for explaining. Someone that is fit and do 50 reps might use the same amount of energy as one un-fit doing 20 reps. Or maybe there's both fit but the one doing 50 reps doesn't weight as much.

Does this mean that if I only care to know how much calories I burn, there is no reason of tracking my workouts? Because the watch measures the heart rate all the time anyways.
  • I think the Strength activity is designed to let users keep track of reps, sets, and weight/resistance as a measure of their fitness. While I don't use it, I can see how this might be interesting data, particularly if the watch comes close to measuring reps.... And I just tried it for push-ups and it was spot on! Pretty cool....

For me, Calories is one of the least interesting metrics as I would never expect it to be accurate. Like VO2max, it is a calculated metric that seems artificial compared to other more critical measurements. For example: Running: give me accurate Time, Distance, Elevation gain, and HR and I'll have a pretty good idea of my fitness compared to similar efforts
Strength: give me accurate Reps, Time, HR, (I'll have to add resistance) and I can measure improvement (or decline)

Yeah okay, so if you only care about how many calories you burn in the end of the day there is no reason to track workouts since the calories will be the same anyways no matter reps and sets?
  • Looking at the default data screens for Activities, it seems like you have 2 options for tracking calories during a workout:
    1) Use the Cardio activity where the primary default screen shows time and calories
    2) Modify the Strength activity to show the 2nd default screen (time and calories) as your primary/only screen

This will allow you to capture estimated calories for a specific workout.

Thx for the answer, how do you do that? Can you show an image or describe step by step please?
