Activity profile for rock climbing?

I was at the climbing wall last night, wearing my new Instinct and, as there isn't an Activity profile for rock climbing that I could track, it's now showing my elevated heart rate as high stress levels.

Is there a way to create a custom Activity profile that just tracks duration, heart rate and calories which I can use when I'm at the climbing wall?

Thank you
  • I just use Cardio activity like I would at the gym. My partner have the vivoactive 3 and she was able to download specific rock climbing activity which tracks altitude gains and autopause between climbs which would be nice.
You can always create your own custom activity.
  • I did create my own activity, using "cardio" as a template. Unfortunately I have to manually change the type on Connect to "Rock Climbing" after each activity, but it's not a major issue for me.
  • The "Cardio" on Instinct tracks duration, HR, calories and also ELEVATION (without GPS) which should be good enough for climbing.

You just need to manually re-classify the activity after syncing to Garmin Connect.
  • I like these answers, but also add the following:

    • turn on the lap button for your "gym climbing" activity
    • create a custom data screen that will show lap time and number of laps, as well as HR, total ascent, time
    • change the default activity name in garmin connect to include activity type "from device"

Then your activity will show up with a useful title, and you can track your number of climbs with the lap button, and later see HR for each climb (on "Routes" tab if you change the activity type above the title in Garmin Connect).

  • You could also base your Rock Climbing custom activity profile on the Floor Climb Activity type. You get some more elevation fields in the Activity details on Garmin Connect Web. And some of the activity data screens on the watch may be helpful too. You can also add custom fields with the vertical speed, the elevation (barometric and/or GPS), elevation gain, etc. And another added advantage of the Floor Climb activity profile is, that in its options you can enable or disable the GPS, so you can use it both indoors and outdoors.

  • I use this app with my Garmin...

    Boulder / Climbing Wall

  • I have tried this setup but the elevation never gets logged. Have you done this for indoor climbing, or just outside? If indoor, do you set the elevation to use barometer, or altimeter? Also, if I change the activity to "rock climbing" from "cardio", I lose the lap information. By reclassify, do you just mean rename and keep the activity as Cardio?

Do not use Cardio as the template, use Floors Climbing instead, as I already suggested in my previous post. You can use it both indoors as well outdoors (if you enable GPS in the settings of the activity).

By reclassifying, it was meant to change the type of the completed and synced activity in Garmin Connect to "Rock Climbing", "Indoor Climbing", or whatever else you wish.

You should also change the naming patter in Garmin Connect Web settings to "Location & Device Activity Name", if you create a copy of another activity profile, and rename it to "Climbing" or similar.

  • I did all of this and I see the laps ("routes") but I don't get any elevation to log for each climb. Do you do this for indoor climbing?

  • sorry, I replied to the wrong message above. I did set my activity up as Cardio, but then added a custom screen for Laps, Ascent, etc. + as described in the answer by Andrew Davis.

I have not tried the Floor Climbing Activity as the template. I'll give it a shot. Thanks!
