my instinct says update ready. when i pewss update now it says GPS press down to intall. as soon as i press install it says finished but the update is till there. did it a couple of times. do i need to connect to gps before i press update?

Check the installed GPS software version:
MENU>Settings>About>Scroll down to GPS
The latest version is 2.30. If that's what you have, then you have installed the latest update.
If you feel that you may be missing an update of sort, download Garmin Webupdater and sync your watch up with the program. If there are any additional updates (like GPS), it will let you know then.
