Issues with Software 2.80

Hi,

I noticed that there seems to be an issue with the calculation of active calories in the watch. When recording walking activities the watch seems to take the value from the activity and then add the value from the steps to it. E.g. in this morning's walking activity I burned 151 active calories, but afterwards the watch gave me a total of 352 active calories (with the value before the workout being 40 something). This leads to vastly inaccurate numbers for total calories like yesterday when with 14,471 steps (3 recorded walking workouts) my total calories was 4,160 while it should have been around 2,700.

Another issue is with temperature units. My watch is set to Celsius but in some places gives me Fahrenheit instead (displayed as Celsius). This affects the Temperature widget on the watch but also the workout data it outputs. Yesterday instead of 4.x °C the watch gave me 24 °C in both the detail data of my workouts as well as the data synced to Strava. 24 °C would be nice in German winter but unfortunately that is not going to happen any time soon...

Also is it normal that the battery is down two bars after just one day of wearing the watch (3 walking workouts with GPS of about 1.5 hours)?
  • about temperature it's not temperature outside but of the watch which is connected to your arm (it could not be 4 Grads and affected by your bodys temperature)
regarding calories I couldn't confirm the same issue by me though I haven't used in last three days walking activity but skiing, probably it's only an walking activity issue.

You may be right. Seems like both values are off. The value in the Temperature widget on my watch currently shows 19°. If that's supposed to be °C on my wrist inside a heated room I'm not buying it. The 24 °C temperature value synced to Strava yesterday and shown in the detail data in Connect when converted to Fahrenheit corresponds to the correct number in Celsius, i.e. 24 Fahrenheit = 4,4 Celsius but with the wrong sign (-4.4 instead of +4.4). Or is this supposed to be the temperature on my wrist as well? Wouldn't make much sense to push that to Strava where they generally record the outside temperature with workouts.

As to the active calories issue with Walking activities, I just ran another test - lunch time walk recorded with GPS:

    Values before walk:
3,334 steps, 1,117 BMR calories, 488 active calories

    Values from walk:
    2,562 steps, 162 calories

    Values after walk:
5,922 steps, 1,212 BMR calories, 729 active calories

The values were noted down immediately after the walk. Steps is off by +26 (matched this morning), active calories by +79. The latter is not double the number from the workout (162) like this morning so it seems like there's a random (?) number getting added to the actual value. Perhaps it's due to me having changed these settings for the Walk activity: I had turned on Auto Elevation, 3D Speed and 3D Distance. Thought it might give me more sensible readings because I walk uphills a lot and usually get a very high value for stairs climbed which I find annoying.

For my evening walk I am going to reset all settings for the Walk activity to defaults to see if there's any change.

Final results from my evening walk (Walk activity with default settings):

    Values before walk:
6,160 steps, 1,407 BMR calories, 800 active calories

    Values from walk:
    4,263 steps, 258 calories

    Values after walk:
10,454 steps, 1,409 BMR calories, 1,153 active calories

Values again recorded immediately after the walk. And they are off again, steps +31, active calories +95. This does not make any sense. Immediately after the walk I can not possibly have burned another 95 active calories, like within a split second.

    Other issues:

    - Sleep tracking has been way off for me. On Sat I went to bed at 1 am and the watch reported me being asleep at 10:30 pm. Similar results yesterday: Went to bed at midnight, watch reported me being asleep at 10:30 again. In the settings I had indicated my regular sleeping time as midnight to 7:30am.

    - Values synced to iOS Health are WAY off (values in Health and Connect are a complete mismatch, again for active calories). That's because Connect writes not only the total value for active calories to Health but also the separate values for the individual workouts which Health then summarizes. Current value for active calories in Connect: 1,179 and in Health: 1,723. I use the values from Health to track my calories in FatSecret.

So not only is the value of active calories too high already but it is even higher than that in iOS Health. This is really not acceptable with a product that's offered at 299 Euros. Consequently, I am going to return my Instinct. Going back to my AW3 which is damn near perfect except for battery life, but then my Instinct is down to 2 bars after barely 2 full days of usage. My AW3 usually lasts me 2 full days with 3 workouts logged per day and used to reply to messages via voice dictate, use Siri etc.
  • Sad to see you go, good luck with your Apple Watch!
  • I can't get the problem here with the calories and temperature issue. In the beginning you mention strava and Garmin connect. Is there on both of them temperature issues? You have to set Celsius on both watch and Garmin connect and it depends what you have set in Strava. Calories in general been calculated BMR + active and build total calories it's not a big it's a feature. What you have set in your health up it's not a n instinct problem but your missconfiguration. I had the same issue where my iPhone sensor were also been written it's steps and probably some other app writes it's calories to health. Check your iOS health settings. And would be better if you put here more screenshots then two pages of description

Happy trails. You're welcome back any time.
