Possible eTrex 10 Replacement

Hi,

I wonder if somebody who has access to the new Garmin Instinct could answer a couple of questions I have...

I'm looking to replace my now ageing eTrex 10 unit and the new Instinct looks like it would be perfect based on the way I use my eTrex (following a custom GPX file with no mapping). Since I am based in the UK I use my eTrex alongside paper-based Ordnance Survey maps which use the OSGB/British Grid co-ordinate system. For example the summit of Ben Nevis would be listed as NN 16670 71287. I also create routes in an app called Memory Map on my iPhone/Android device and manually transfer the resulting GPX file(s) to the eTrex using a third party device which allows me to access the eTrex filesystem over WiFi (it effectively 'shares' any device that offers USB disk access when plugged into a PC). I don't think Garmin Connect is an option for transferring because I wouldn't have internet access when I'm camping.

So my questions are:

1) Can the Instinct show my current position in OSGB format?

2) Can I enter a OSGB co-ordinate to create a Mark/Waypoint directly on the device and then navigate to this (in a straight line is fine)?

3) Is it possible (using the charging cable) to plug the watch into a PC and see (some of) the filesystem - enough to place a GPX file on it? I have read a FR935 can do this by placing a GPX file into the NEWFILES folder, does the Instinct offer this too?

Appreciate anyone taking the time to look at this and possibly answer any of my questions.

Regards,

Dave.
  • Hi Dave,

Just got my new Instinct today and it looks really promising.
The answer to your 3 questions is yes. You can set (I guess because there are so much...) any format existing for GPS position (this is a general setting for both display and target creation) and I confirm OSGB is inside.

I tried your suggestion for your 3rd question and it works ! It saved me a little time importing it into GC for a course I want to do for testing the watch navigation.
However I've read somewhere that some gpx files may not be directly compatible... So I hope you won't have any surprise when away from internet. Don't know if that might be interesting for you but the instinct is also compatible with the new Explore app which works offline (not tried yet though).

    Best regards,
    David

Fantastic! Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions - just got to wait for Santa to visit now! :P

Would be happy to hear how you get on with your navigation testing (any +/-) if you have time to post at some point...
  • Well, I can tell you my feelings about the test I did yesterday, but as it is my first device with navigation capabilities (and it is the reason I bought it) I don't have any reference to compare with.

So far I am delighted. Everything did not go perfectly but obviously the reason is that I just miss some experience of it.
I simply followed a track (with no waypoint - but I noticed the map shows all recorded gps positions even if created outside of the course you want to follow).
The watch shows your heading and the heading you should follow, the track you want to do and the breadcrumbs of what you are doing.
I think the auto zoom is too large but you can set a custom default zoom (or you can zoom in/out in any case but this implies a few more clicks).

There is an off-course alert which works well from my point of view.
Not perfectly well of course since because of gps precision you sometimes get wrong alerts which stop almost instantly, but on the other side it is better to be alerted quickly when you really missed something. I did not try using Galileo which may help to have a better precision.
You cannot set the off-course distance for this alert, which could be nice though tricky to find the best value...
I saw you can also use a data field showing the current off-course distance.

At some point I went through a 1km shortcut and the Instinct was not lost at all when I went back later on the track.

I greatly appreciate (compared to my older FR235) that you can modify every activity settings and access main clock and ABC widget even when doing an activity.
For example I had to disable the autoclimb function because it was always switching away from the map to data screens.

There are so much settings and available data fields that I think you can always customize it the way it better suits to you...
The only missing data for me is the remaining ascent/descent until your destination/next waypoint. I only found vertical distance to destination which is useless for me.

The screen is small but of sufficient size (higher resolution would be necessary only for full topo maps) and really highly readable (I often have the feeling the backlight is on !).

I had a quick look on Explore app and it seems quite easy to use. I just created gps points and downloaded them to my watch.

So, from navigation point of view it seems to me that you can't get a better device except a fenix 5 plus.
