Part of gpx track missing but rest of the data is correct

Hello,

after checking one of my last hikes in Garmin Connect, I noticed, that the map only shows half of the hike. Also exporting the gpx track into another app showed the same behaviour.

I found a topic describing something similar. There it seemed to be a missing GPS lock.

Not getting a GPS lock for 15-30 minutes is something I can believe in, but for several hours? In my case the hike took a total of 9h 20min and the gpx data only starts after around 5 hours. I didn't wait until the watch showed a GPS lock before I started hiking. Just started the activity and got going, the same as I did for several other hikes in the mountains and I never had this issue before in the last two years.

All the other data like elevation gain, distance, time, etc. seems to be correct. But if no GPS data was recorded, how did the watch get the correct distance? The hike covered some steep terrain so probably not your "normal" arm movements, so if it got the correct distance by using the accelerometer I am really impressed.

My hope is that the FIT file was corrupted and it is possible to restore the GPS data. Maybe someone can take a look at the attached FIT file.
In general I would like to know what the issue was, so that I can take some measures to prevent it in the future.

Best regards and thank you very much

Christoph

It can happen, especially if there is no good GPS signal, and/or no mobile data to download the CPE update, or when the available CPE file is incompatible (i.e. after a firmware update, or after a significant change of location).

I recommend hard-resetting the watch - sync, then press the Light button for some 30s till it completely shuts down (hold the button through the emergency alert, if it comes), wait little bit, and then restart. No worry, no data or settings will be lost with it. [more details]. Then start the watch and connect it over the USB cable to a computer with Garmin Express, delete the CPE file in the folder //GARMIN/RemoteSW/ on the watch, and then check for updates in Garmin Express.

But if no GPS data was recorded, how did the watch get the correct distance?

When no GPS data is available, or the GPS signal is weak with low accuracy, the watch uses the accelerometer to estimate the distance, using the steps, the average stride length, and adjusting it using the cadence and acceleration.

My hope is that the FIT file was corrupted and it is possible to restore the GPS data.

That's rather unlikely, but if a kind forum member is willing to spend the time on it, and check it anyway, then why not.
