Instinct Solar Altimeter Home Screen update intervals

Hello!

I own an Instinct Solar (Firmvare v17.00) and primarily need its altimeter functions for mountain sports. The altimeter works fine. However the small widget on the Home screen (the one you can display in the top right corner) updates only once every several minutes. This means that to check my altitude I have to unlock the watch, navigate to the altimeter, wait for a couple of seconds and then lock the watch again, which is exactly 3 interactions too many (especially when wearing gloves).

Is there any setting that I overlooked for the update interval? Or can I tweak this in some firmware config file? If not: Is Garmin aware of this issue/where can I file bug reports?

Alternatively: Is there any way I can lock my watch and have it constantly display the altimeter? Because it seems to automatically switch back to the home screen after some time.

Thanks in advance!

  • The refreshing rate of most values is deliberately set low in the sake of preserving the battery power, when in the watch mode. If you need to watch the elevation continuously, I recommend starting the activity for your mountain sport, and adding the elevation field to one of the data screens of the concerned activity profile (or adding an entirely new screen with the elevation). The refreshing rate is higher in activity mode (1s). You can also navigate to the ABC screen. As long as the activity is running in the background, the Altimeter screen will not timeout, and will refresh quicker. The disadvantage is, that the battery will drain faster in the activity mode. If it is a concern, you can at least disable the GPS in the activity settings (if you do not need it), to reduce the power consumption considerably.
