Altimeter Dead?

My Instinct Solar is about 1.5 years old.  Never had a moment's trouble until two weeks ago.  My husband and I are finishing our hike of the Appalachian Trail and hiking daily long distances.  I saved a hike and got the "failure" notification.  (Which I've never seen on any of my Garmins over the years)  I went to history, saw the hike, and didn't think anything about it.

We were without cell service for a few days.  When we got back in coverage, I noticed my watch had unpaired from my phone.  Nothing I did would pair it.  I finally took the activities (including the "failure" one) off the watch and managed to get them uploaded to my panel via a laptop computer.  Then I did a hard reset (UGH) and started over.  The watch worked great until yesterday when I got the "failure" again.  But it did manage to upload the activity.  I read on the forum here about "resume later" may cause a problem so decided today not to do that.  I also deleted the history for good measure.

But then this morning during the first climb of my hike I noticed my elevation wasn't changing.  For 10 miles.  I stopped the activity at lunch, calibrated the elevation, started a new one, and same thing.  The altimeter is not functional basically overnight.  I never wear it in the shower, etc.  Today we got into a hotel and I ran warm water into the sensors as suggested in the support FAQs, recalibrated, and nothing.

I guess I can try resetting it yet again, but man, this is frustrating.  I've had Garmin watches for decades and NEVER had one fail in less than two years!  We're almost done here in Virginia and about to jump up to Hanover, NH to finish the last 440 miles of trail.  Not having my Instinct working properly for those hikes is going to seriously stink. :(

TIA for any ideas.

  • What is your firmware version? There have been numerous reports about altimeter issues after v16.00, so you may be affected as well. Everybody is waiting for a fix...

  • It's 17.00.  could be.  Burned it down again, soaked it for about 10 minutes in very mild soap and water and v today it finally registered a floor for the first time in three days.  Fingers crossed it comes back to life.  Will watch for new firmware.  Thanks!
