Instinct Solar [Surf Edition] - Firmware Backdating?

I'm still trying to fix this crashing issue, which seems new since the 16.50 software release.

I'd like to try downgrading the firmware to the previous stable release, to see if the problem goes away. However, I'm having a hard time making the downgrade happen.

Here's what I'm doing:

Download https://download.garmin.com/software/Instinct_1650Beta.zip
Mount the watch's filesystem via USB.
Copy System_Backdate_1600/GUPDATE.GCD into the GARMIN folder of the watch.
Safely disconnect the watch.
Restart the watch.

As far as I can tell, that process should result in the watch installing the update (i.e., downgrade to 16.0), but nothing seems to happen, other than the GUPDATE.GCD file disappearing from the filesystem completely.

Any tips?

That is strange, it worked for me. Yes, the file GUPDATE.GCD from the System_Backdate_1600 subdirectory goes into the main folder of the watch.
