How to turn off SMS and Whatspp notifications

I have switched off permission for SMS and Whatsapp messages to come through to my phone, but they still do. Can anyone help me to switch them off properly? I want to keep the watch connected to my phone for heart rate, etc.

Click on device circle in upper right corner -> Sounds & Alerts -> Smart Notifications. Turn off during activity and not during activity. I have no notifications this way while heart rate is still synced.

I have an Android and I can enable/disable all app notifications through the Garmin Connect App.

Go to the main menu of the GC app (3 dashes on upper left corner of main page) => Settings (gear) => Notifications => App Notifications

The entire list of phone apps will be displayed with the on/off slider.

I've done this, and switched off permission for Whatsapp, but Whatsapp messages still came through.
