Wave Count

So i have updated to the latest firmware and its better. However it showed that i caught 25 waves but when i looked on my data of recorded and tracked rides, the graph cart clearly showed 5 waves. This is the actual amount of waves. Hope the next update eliminates this.

  • Latest updates. Watch still over counting ridden waves. Several readings of 45 MPH which is not even close to the actual speed. I cant believe that Garmin cant fix the simple issue. Rip Curl Watch and the Apple Watch using the Dawn Patrol app blows Garmin away hands down in the surf tracking game.

  • My partner has the Surf and she's using it right now, also reporting it being very inaccurate.  However, there's another improvement update in Beta right now, so perhaps it will be better.  The hardware is there, it seems that Garmin is really working hard on getting the development to catch up, as the last few updates to the Instinct Solar brought the biggest improvements to the Surf.  There's a total of seven fixes in the list of updates for the Surf alone and it really looks like Garmin is working hard on perfecting the Instinct Solar and not just adding features before old ones are stable.  Having dealt with Coros' top-end model where nearly everything was unfinished and not working properly for the very usage they advertised, I see the difference in how on this specific model Garmin is fixing things that are already there before adding new stuff.  Other models may vary.

The last one was improved GPS in Surf Mode, this is being tested in the 16.41 Beta:

    • [Surf] Improved wave detection in Surf activities.

  • I looked at the Rip Curl Search 2 for my partner and it has tremendously bad reviews.  It offered lots of promise, but there are pretty damning reviews.

  • I have owned all three watches that offer surf tracking and I probably should do a Youtube review on them (Lol)

Apple Watch with Dawn Patrol App is probably IMHO the best surf tracker as far as accuracy. However the Apple watch is not the most durable of the bunch and I have drowned two of them.  (Glad i got insurance) Mostly because the water resistant ability of the watch is not the greatest.

Rip Curl GPS 2 was a disaster when it first hit the market. My son and I both got them as Christmas gifts and both had issues like dropping the GPS signal mid surf session. But apparently Rip Curl updated and fixed the issue and this watch became a favorite. Battery life was decent and GPS was improved. I dont like the strap as its uncomfortable and the watch is not a Smart watch and really is best for just surf tracking.

Garmin Instinct Solar IMHO is the worst of the bunch, especially for the price. Garmin should have had a few top pro surfers try them out then fix the issues before advertising them as a surf tracking watch. The best thing about this watch is the soft wristband and the solar charging.

  • According to Garmin, it was developed in cooperation with some German pro surfer.
