Backlight Stuck On During Activity

I have an Instinct Dual Power (Japanese version of the Solar) with firmware 13.30 (the latest).

My backlight settings During activity (not during activity) are:
- Keys ->    After Sunset    (Off)
- Alerts ->         Off             (On)
- Gesture ->     Off             (On)
- Timeout ->      4s              (4s)
- Brightness -> 20%          (20%)

These usually work as intended for activities shorter than 1h.

However, during activities longer than 1h my backlight often gets "stuck on".
This happens for no apparent reason (no notification/lap/gesture) and at irregular intervals (1min to 10min).
Also, if I press the CTRL key to manually turn the light on, this stays on forever (instead of going off after the 4s interval in the settings).
If I press the CTRL button, I can manually turn the ligth off up to the next "random event" that makes the light turn on.

This is a serious problem because it drains my battery quite fast during activities.
While I can usually notice during the night (and turn the light off), it is impossible to do so during the day.

What can I do?
Thank you for your help,
Giordano

  • Hi Giordano. I am sorry you are experiencing an odd backlight issue during a long activity.

    There are two troubleshooting steps to try:

    1) Soft Reset - hold down your top left CTRL button until your Instinct turns off, then let go

    2) Master Reset - How to Reset My Garmin Outdoor Watch

    If the backlight stuck on issue continues, please reach out to Japan's Garmin Product Support. They will have the same APAC Japan specific Instinct Solar watch and will be able to either replicate the issue or determine it is your watch specifically that has gone sideways and you can exchange it.
