Is DEM data the same as the Elevation Corrections on GC?

Really learning the ins and outs of my Instinct Tactical Solar.  As I read threads about the elevation inaccuracies I started to really play with the settings and calibrations.

I just learned about the elevation corrections on Garmin Connect, and that data seems very accurate compared to my topo maps on Gaia.  When  I calibrate the watch using DEM, the altitude also seems very correct compared to Gaia, not so much if I calibrate using GPS.

I am curious, is the data that DEM pulls when calibrated using DEM, the same data set that appears on Garmin Connect through elevation corrections?  It would make sense, but I can't see that confirmed anywhere.

The data is the same. The difference is one uses the data just to calibrate and then uses the barometric altimeter for the rest of the activity where elevation corrections uses the data and changes the entire activity.

  • Thanks, that's exactly what I thought.  And just to be sure, DEM won't work without cellular data, correct?  Even though my phone still accesses GPS without cell service, that data comes through the phone via data and not through the phone's GPS signal?

I don't own an Instinct, but it's my understanding the Instinct needs a phone connection to access the DEM data.  I use a 945 that has maps loaded on the watch and an internet connection isn't necessary.
