See the support document File Limitations of the Instinct. It tells the following:
When sending or creating files for your Instinct, keep in mind the following device limitations:
Hmmmm, I guess I haven't really examined the files on the watch from my computer, I upload to my phone via Bluetooth. Been using etrex series hand helds for 15 years so I am real familiar with the unit file structure. I have the touch 35 dropping a track point every .1 mile (cycling), in the instinct system settings, I only see two options, "smart" and 1 second intervals. At 1 second, I would rack up 10k points in under 3 hours which would be fine unless it started dropping the points from the beginning (assuming I am not connected to the phone during the activity). I guess I am just trying to understand exactly where my limitations are. It isn't that unusual to do a 4 or 5 hour ride. I hate losing data. I didn't necessarily get the instinct to replace the Touch35 since the maps on the watch are fairly "abbreviated", lol.

The Etrex TIuch 35 has indeed different limitations than Instinct. See the document User Data Limitations of the eTrex Touch Series
... otherwise, on the Instinct, you should be regularly cleaning up minimally the folder //GARMIN/Activity/ to assure sufficient room on the storage. Also deleting unused files from //GARMIN/Workouts and //GARMIN/Courses is recommended, since Instinct has a rather small storage and gets filled quickly, especially when you use the Every Second Recording and/or record long activities.
