Thinking of buying an Instinct Solar Tactical or Surf...

Hi all, I'm thinking of buying a Garmin Instinct Solar, either a tactical or a surf edition. Are there still any current issues with them I should be aware of before parting with my money?

I currently have a G-Shock which I've worn everyday for 10 years, but looking to get something with more smart features. My main needs are for it to be rugged and long battery life, so the instinct solar jumped out at me.

I notice a lot of the posts were from 2019 when the original instincts were being used, but are there still known issues with the current solars or current firmware that I should be aware of?

Any advice would be great! Thanks.

  • Be sure you know what your are buying, I watched a lot of videos before buying my instinct solar. The biggest complaint was the temp sensor is inaccurate (this is because its next to your skin, manual says to remove watch to get an accurate reading). I have been very happy with mine so far after a month.

There is currently an issue with tide times on the surf, as mentioned in this forum and some issues with hiking routes, However Garmin support and devs are active here and do seem to try to resolve these issues by listening to their customers.

  • Thank you Adam. My biggest concern is battery life and just generally things not working as they should. If I'm spending £300-£350 on a smartwatch, I don't want to question whether time time or data is incorrect. I've read in a few posts about the battery depleting quicker than it should after a while, so again.. paying extra for the solar charging you want it to give you the battery life it should.

  • I came from a huawei smart watch i was charging every night, I can comfortably go 2 weeks with instinct solar, doing 1 to 2 activities a week. After a charge and normal settings I get an estimated 24 days life.

The Solar feature wont make the battery last forever, just compliment the battery (unless you have it set to only tell the time and nothing else!) - I have not made much use of it in the current weather as it tends to be covered by my sleeves.

What the solar version does have over the non solar version is updated sensors.

    Hope this helps
