13.20 - Hiking navigation behavior different from 12.20

HI,

I was so excited to upgrade to 13.20 and tried the first hiking ~9k with navigation today. I was totally shocked it is different from 12.20. After I started the course the watch map always display distance to my starting point and direction arrow to the staring point too until I finished my hike(picture 1). I even tried off course far away but there is no off course alert (I turned on off course alert on watch). And there is no turn by turn (TBT) alert. I usually got TBT which watch automatically pick the turn and gave me alert if I sync the course from the Garmin Connect app from cell phone. I checked the elevation plot I did not see any progress bar moving in the chart even I already hiked 5k. Basically I would say it only display course and my current location. nothing else is working. Does anyone notice the same behavior? Is there any chance I can install back to 12.20?

I did another test in my house neighbor with predefined course. Once you off course, you will never back to on course anymore (Even I am on course for a long time). The watch keeps in off course mode with distance to the closest part of course and direction arrow.

  • The downgrade wipes all settings, so if you did not verify it after the downgrade, the setting for auto-update was set back to the default ON

  • Thanks trux. The only thing I noticed the ANT/BLE was upgraded to 3.0 which is part of 1320 package. There is no revert function for this. Not sure system version 1220 is compatible with ANT/BLE 3.0 or not. So far I did not have any issue for this combination.

  • It should not matter. You'd need an older beta package containing also the older ANT/BLE firmware, but as long as you do not have any issues, it is better keeping the newer version, anyway

  • Just tried to verify this and have the same issue. Since I have no datafield set on the map page there is no distance indication, but to my best understanding the arrow seemed to point to the nearest part of the course. No turn-by-turn instructions which I had before when importing a course via Garmin Connect. I looked at the elevation plot too and did indeed not see a progress bar (a vertical line crossing the elevation graph at horizontal distance covered I suppose?), but I have to admit I never used that plot before anyway (Netherlands...pretty flat).

I will wait for Garmin to fix this instead of downgrading, don't like to have all my settings wiped...

  • Well i started my navigation on a course but not directly at the starting point, so it never put me on the track and did not show any progress at the elevation. I believe the distance was measured to the starting point arrow probably pointed there too.

  • Hey, thanks so much for posting this. I thought I was going crazy. I have the Garmin Instinct (not Solar) and got the 13.20 update pushed to me a week ago. I've gone on two runs since then, on courses that I designed on the Garmin Connect website. On both runs, I was on the course right at the beginning, and then the Instinct lost track of me on the course. No turn by turn directions, just the distance back to start, for nearly the entire run. Right at the end of each run, when I was maybe 100 meters away from the finish, it found me again and I got an "on course" notification.

I've downgraded to 12.20 (which I got out of the 13.20 beta download zip file). I'll have to reapply my settings, which will be a pain. But I use courses all the time, so I'd rather deal with the settings than have courses not working. I've also turned off automatic updates so this never happens again. In the future, I'll wait and let other users be the guinea pigs for Garmin's updates.

    Thanks again!

  • Thought I'd quickly follow up after downgrading to 12.20 and going out for a test activity. Both happy and dismayed. Happy that 12.20 restores turn-by-turn directions during course navigation. Dismayed that Garmin would push an update to Instinct watches that breaks this feature that I'm so dependent on. If your watch is still on 12.20 and you use turn-by-turn course navigation, turn off automatic updates NOW before you get 13.20! I'm still working on getting my watch set up again after the downgrade, but so glad to have a fully functional watch again.

  • I totally understand your frustration. We are on the same boat. Top reason I like this watch is for my hiking navigation. I used this function almost every weekend hiking activity with my family. It actually saved us few times we got lost. I did not call Garmin support to log this problem since I reverted back 12:20 and happy about it. I would guess there are more people will have this problem. I saw the 13.20 change log it fixed Explore navigation issue it may cause our case sync from Garmin Connect problem. We will see how it goes.

  • I’m having the same issue. I can’t get the turn-by-turn to function correctly. It will show the distance to the waypoint, reach 0, and then will not advance to the next waypoint for the duration of the entire course. Just purchased the watch and sure would love for the navigation to work correctly!

  • I don't know how long it will take Garmin to fix turn-by-turn navigation. In the meantime, for anyone who wants this feature working again, you can downgrade to 12.20, which works great.

Scroll down to the bottom of the appropriate page for your watch, and they explain how to downgrade:

    1. If you would like to revert to the last public release software, drop the gupdate.gcd file, found in the System_Backdate_v1220 folder, into the \GARMIN folder of the device.
    2. NOTE: If you revert to an older version of software, all of your settings will be reset to defaults.
