Does Garmin add new features to its watches?

I note that on the instinct the MoveIQ does not recognise walking, you have to record that manually, also,it does not provide a sleep score. I note that some other manufacturers bring new features to their watches but it seems to me that Garmin does not tend to make changes other than bug fixes. Is that correct?

It does recognize walking. At least in my case it works all right. Though it may depend on the pace - if your pace is too slow, or the walks too short, it may perhaps fail. In any case, Instinct only has the MoveIQ feature for marking the walks on the daily activity graph. It does not have the Activity Auto-Start option, that would automatically start recording the detailed monitoring, or starting the GPS.

No, it is not. Instinct (standard) was retrofited with new functionality long time after its initial release. For example Body Battery, and many other minor improvements.

  • Thanks, that is good to know. I know my vivoactive 3 activity auto start for walking so was disappointed to see that it was not on the Instinct. I am sure there is no technical reason for not having it. It is also good to know that Garmin add new features to existing devices so maybe walking can be added to the auto start activities and they might even add sleep scores but I had not appreciated that the Instinct falls into the 'outdoors and Recreation' category and not 'sports and fitness'. Should have checked more carefully before buying.

I do not quite believe the auto-start option will be available on Instinct. One of Instinct's main selling points is its battery life, and the automated turning on of the GPS, everytime you start to walk, would compromise this advantage greatly. Personally, I also prefer starting my activities manually, than having a device detecting what I am supposed to be doing. Even if the device detected it correctly, there is necessarily always a delay, that I prefere avoiding, so it is better not getting used to rely on it.
