steps and distance tracking very inaccurate for daily wear in and outdoors.

Instinct Solar - 4 months old. Accuracy when tracking an activity like walking or running is fine (within 500 steps or 0.5km) when worn concurrently to Apple Watch3. But when wearing just day to day in/out the house and not specifically tracking any activity, the step count and distance covered is massively different - ie 2-3000 steps different and 1/2 the distance!  .. what am i missing here?! as it's very frustrating and means i can't abandon my Apple Watch for daily non activity tracking

  • Well, the distance is one thing, and the number of steps another one. When you do outdoor activities, the distance is measured with the GPS, but when the GPS is off, or when you are indoors, then the average stride length is used to calculate the distance. You may need to calibrate it.

You tell there is a difference of 2-3k steps per day, but are you sure the Apple watch has it right, while instinct not? It could be also vice versa. Or both of them can be wrong. Or the definition of the step, or the sensing threshold may differ. Try doing a hundred steps (or more), counting them manually, and them compare tne number with the values both watches measured, to see which one is more accurate.
