Can someone confirm that Running Dynamics is NOT compatible or possible with the Instinct Solar?

Can someone confirm that the Running Dynamics Pod is NOT compatible with the Instinct Solar, e.g. it won't show vertical data or balance data. Similarly, the HRM Pro Strap's ability to record running dynamics also won't work? I am asking as I would like to improve accurancy of my sensors, but do not want to invest into sensor's that generate data that the Instinct won't be able to record.

  • I might have to go buy one just to find out for sure.Grinning However, just looking the HRM-Pro owner's manual. My interpretation is that the store-and-forward feature does not include running dynamics. So if not paired via ANT+ (not Bluetooth) with a compatible device. It won't store it separately to view later.

    HRM-Pro - Running Dynamics

NOTE: To use the running dynamics features, the HRM-Pro accessory must be paired to your compatible Garmin device using ANT‍+® technology.
  • store-and-forward feature does not include running dynamics

Again, the "store-and-forward feature" is used to feed the data from the HRM to the watch. However, unlike other HRMs, HRM Pro can be used competely standalone and sync directly to Garmin Connect. Perhaps it is the same kind of transfer, perhaps not.

So, yes, it is possible it indeed does not transfer the RD data to GC, but I see no reason why Garmin would decide so. Except, if the RD somehow needs some postprocessing on the watch, combining the HRM data with the step & cadence data of the watch.

  • Well, after rereading all the available documents, I still see no definitive conclusion, but start to fear that the RD is indeed not synced to GC, when connected directly, making it worthless for an Instinct owner - you better buy the cheapest ANT+ chest belt HRM. You can get one for $20, and the effect will be same as with the $120 HRM Pro (if it really does not offer anything else than the HR).

  • I think your logic is sound!  And it kind of answers my question about XC Ski Power, I imagine.  Could spend the $150 to find out but since I'm not an Olympic skier my power output is pointless to track.  Interesting, maybe, how many watts a person like me can generate, but really of no significance.

  • I was about to post a question about whether or not this situation has change in the last 6 months, but i thought i would just return to this thread..

is it likely that Garmin will expand running dynamic compatibility/ or store and forward capabilities  to our Solar Instincts (when captured from a HRM-Pro or running pod)?

Thinking of buying a HRM-Pro, but obvs won't if it's useless with my watch. Seems silly for Garmin to lose a sale over a firmware tweak.

  • Can't speak for Garmin, but it seems unlikely that this function would be added to the Instinct (solar or non-solar).  Running dynamics will probably remain with the Forerunners and the do-all fenix line.

  • Instinct 2 series are compatible with the Running Dynamics Pod.

But I am not able to pair it. "no sensors found" is the message I get.

  • Make sure you shake the pod to wake it up.  Then try pairing.
