Fixing wave count

Garmin

What is your plan to fix wave count for real surfers?

The simple fix is to adust watch software to exclude activity under 5 or 6 mph when in surf mode.

The SUP group may need a slightly higher speed.

Waves are aprox 10 mph, maybe 9.

Thisbis critical ifbyou want to be taken seriously.

  • If you say how I can do it...

  • First session standard settings:

OK, thanks for the link. I checked the background data, and the session contains 371 GPS points, and a relatively good GPS track of the entire session. At least from my point of view, although only you can tell whether it really corresponds to the reality.

You can visualize the GPS track of the session in a very simple way - click the cogwheel symbol on the activity page in Garmin Connect Web, and select the option "Save as Course". Use the type "Other". The full track will then appear on the map, not only the wave markers. You can then perhaps tell better whether it is really a credible track. To me it looks like one, and I also think that it should not be difficult to detect the waves from it.

So it is not a problem of the hardware, rather just the software needs some tuning. If you send the developers both the activity link or file, and the course, and explain where the waves should be detected, then it may help them greatly with fixing the algorithm,

  • I just did it. The track seems correct and the place is right (only few meters of worthless error on the satellite map). I don't know how send this files to the developers but I think this is not my job. The forum is Garmin and if they are interested they can get everything needed. The watch is sold for a surf watch and "software needs some tuning" is too optimistic. The software is done probably in smartworking and never tested on the field. Whatever it's incredble for a brand like Garmin, I have also other very good Garmin devices on my boat. I already sent a mail to the Garmin italian support and to the shop that sold me the item to give it back. I'm so sorry because it's a very nice watch but not developed for surf activity.

You can use the email address, I wrote in my previous post ([email protected]). However, if you are not interested in reporting them the issue, and prefer being refunded, just do it. I was just trying to help getting it fixed.

  • I wrote a mail to [email protected] . Thank you Trux.

  • Finally had the chance to try my instinct solar while surfing. The watch does a pretty good job recording the position, the problem is with software. I uploaded my gpx file into another surfing app, and the 5 waves that I surfed showed up, instead of 21 waves.

Garmin, you really need to improve your software. You are advertising this watch as a surf watch, without the right tools. Garmin connect needs some serious improvement when it comes to the surfing activity. This watch costs 50€ more than the basic instinct solar, and it does not work as it was supposed.

    Garmin connect:

Another surf app that actually reads well the gpx file:

Garmin, improve your software, or stop advertising that you have a surf watch when you don't

  • Hello, which program is the one that counts well? if you pass the file it reads it as it should? could you tell us what it is? thanks!

  • Hello. I’m using an android app called waves tracker. You can check their website https://www.wavestracker.com

  • I've tried it ... and yes ... it works.
For me it is a relief, it means that if they fix the software, we have a wonderful watch, at the moment it is trash for surfing.
