Instinct Solar (firmware version 11.0) Stopping part way through activity

Hello All,

On my last 2 runs, the watch has stopped itself part way through (after 800metres or so). I only noticed this much later in my run (I don't check my watch often during an activity). The first time it happened, I assumed I had inadvertently pressed the top right button due to learning an additional jacket.

However, I have just come back from a run and the same thing happened (although stopped after 2km on the same route as before), and I was not wearing an additional jacket, so it seems like bug to me, or faulty hardware.

Has anyone else encountered this?

Any guidance or assistance great appreciated!

Mark

  • OK, just to add some more information to the situation: Out of interest I copied the FIT files off the device for the 2 activities in question, and viewed them with the utility at "www.fitfileviewer.com".

There are events that happened within both activities described as event=power_up and event_type=stop_all. These occurred exactly where the activities were stopped.

    See the attached images.

Do these events indicate an issue? I have looked at other FIT files and they do not have these "power_up" event types listed. Is my device rebooting? Could a factory reset help? Should I venture into the world of beta testing the new version 12 Beta?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

  • It seems that your watch crashed and rebooted as I mentioned in some of my post about crashing while mountaineering with navigation and swimming and you didn’t start the activity after reboot.

  • I have consistent reboots both pool and open water swimming, which continue to record when I press start again. In open water you don’t notice it’s stopped as you don’t check it often so lose the first kilo of your sea swim. Never had it on a run though

  • It seems like an issue that needs fixing. Looking at the change log for 11.76, it doesn’t seem to mention random reboots being fixed, which is disappointing!

When it happened the first time, I guess it timed out and there was no option to resume the activity. I checked my watch early enough on the second occurrence and was able to resume the activity, but of course several km were lost from the activity.

What firmware version are you both using, I assume version 11.0?

  • On beta 11.76 I had less crashes than before on 11.00 stable but still had some. So it seems that this issue depends on some constellations of the watch state (I don't know maybe number of activities, courses, free space, cache etc.)

  • I have loaded 11.76 onto the watch and did a test run with no issues. Only one activity so far, but will get some more activities logged and report back...

  • I have done a few more activities and so far so good with 11.76.

I think you are right, it all depends on a rather large number of variables. In my case it was crashing on runs rather than hikes. I was not navigating during the activities (I believe a nav related crash was addressed by a recent update).

Garmin should really be pulling in FIT files from affected devices in order to get to the bottom of things... I’m happy to send them mine.

Also, my wife has the exact same phone and has experienced crashes on version 11.00 too. Hers crashed on a hike activity... all very strange.
