Extremely slow charging from AC, fast with Battery Pack

I have a Garmin Instinct Dual Power (Japanese version of the Instinct Solar) and I noticed it is charging super slow.
I tried several wall chargers (Samsung 2A quick charge, Samsung old 1A charger, unbranded charger) and my watch charges very slow.
Instead, if I charge the watch with my battery pack (Anker, 20,000 mAh) it is much faster.

Some numbers:
- Wall charger in 20min from 35% to 43% = 0.4% per minute
- Battery pack in 30 min from 43% to 72% = 0.97% per minute

I find this behaviour rather disturbing as the watch (and not the charger) should be able to regulate the charging speed (hence the power/current absorption).
Can this issue be solved by a firmware update?
Anyone else experiencing something similar?

Thank you for your help,
Giordano

  • And how does it look when you charge it from an USB port of a computer? BTW, that\s what Garmin recommends.

  • I tested it with my laptop. It only has usb-c ports, so I tried two different adapters which show a significant difference:

    - USB-A adapter with AC power delivery: in 14 min from 66% to 71% = 0.36% per minute

    - USB-A single adapter: in 13 min from 71% to 81% = 0.77% per minute

I did the same test with charging my phone and the charging time was identical from the two different adapters.

Is there a way to solve this watch issue?

Thank you for your help, Giordano

  • The problem is that you are comparing the charging times at different levels of the charge, so its like comparing apples with oranges. You need to make a test with different chargers charging always from the same minimal level to the same maximal level. The charging curve of the battery is not linear.

  • That's right, charge from 5 to 100% with each adapter and then compare the charging times. A few minutes of charging at different battery levels cannot be measured.
