Instinct solar freezes

Hi,

Since the last update of the firmware (I have now version 11), my instinct solar keeps freezing up. Sometimes, the main watchface is hours behind the actual time and a click of a button "wakes it up" and it shows the correct time, but mostly I need to soft-reset it and of course lose everything that I did on that day.

This did not happen with earlier firmwares but now happens more and more... :-/

I did not set any "power saving mode" nor do I have set the "automated key lock" (I hope this is the right name for it, I am using a german UI).

It almost always happens over night. Two days ago, at 630 AM the display read 445 AM. Today at 755 AM it reads 230 AM (and BTW I did not wear the watch last night as it was charging...)

I was a very happy customer, but now I am really starting to lose confidence in the watch.

And yes, I have restarted the watch quite a few times ;-)

Anybody else experiencing similar issues?

Do I have to revert to a prior version of the firmware? And if so how do I do this and where do I get this firmware from?

*Any* help is greatly appreciated!

Cheers.

Pascal

  • Mine has done this for a few weeks now. I contacted Support and they had me clear out the old data and soft reset. All great for a week but woke this AM and the watch had frozen during sleep with no Connect connectivity. As usual, a soft reboot "fixed" it.

I will respond to the Garmin Rep that the watch is still not functioning correctly. As for hooking up my $400 watch to a PC on a weekly basis to free up memory, it isn't gonna happen. This is either a firmware or hardware issue.

Well, if you prefer living with the freezing, or plan giving the watch back, then why not. It certainly is a problem of the firmware, but as you see, the bug is there since months, still after several firmware version releases, and it may take a few months more before Garmin fixes it (if it happens at all). So if you want to keep the watch, I'd recommend the regular clean up anyway.

  • Yes, next time I go camping for a week, I will take a power brick, laptop, cables, and charger so that I can clear out memory on my Instinct after my hike to the waterfall. Meanwhile, my wife's $50 Fitbit will chug along quite happily with no hacks.

Don't mistake playing around in the folders as being "techie" and cool. You are enabling poor customer satisfaction. This watch should work out-of-the-box, as advertised. Return it if it does not. Hoping/waiting for a fix is also unacceptable. I have the Fenix 5x and zero issues like this. Get your watch fixed.

I am just a user like you, and trying to help you. Not sure how I can "enable poor customer satisfation" with that, but you are free not to use my advice, of course, if you do not like it. Smiley

  • Because you are suggesting a fix to an issue that the manufacturer should be implementing. I appreciate your suggestion, but this is Garmin's issue to fix and not the customers. The more users put up with workarounds, the less Garmin is inclined to fix this obvious issue.

  • Because you are suggesting a fix

In that case, contact the Support and ask them to close the forums, because that's exactly what the forums are here for - to help each other with advices and workarounds. If you did not want any advice from the user community, then why did you come here? Rather speak directly to Garmin 's customer support.

  • I've been have this issue too! Usually I can just press the down button and then go back and the time fixes itself. But today I have to hold the power button to turn it off. Getting frustrating @garmin

  • i was having the same freezing issues with my new watch. the first time it started was when it was about 4 weeks old. I thought it a bit odd at the time, but after another couple of weeks it became more regular until it was happening 2 or more times a day.  i came across this post, read all the other comments and thought this is crazy having to muck around with different software versions etc (mine is always up to date with latest release), clearing memory (mine has heaps of spare memory), and thought maybe its something else.

i went through my garmin settings on my phone and found that my other 2 garmin watches (now just used for backup or for the kids to wear) were still connected to the phone. I disconnected the old watches from the phone and from that day (just over 2 weeks now), i have not had a single freeze. give this a go for anyone having similar problems. i'll repost if the freezing reoccurs, but it looks like its fixed.

  • Mine just froze in the night after receiving the 13.20 update.  So still happening as best I can tell.

  • I just got my Solar 3 days ago.

This watch is nothing else just trouble from the beginning. It freezes 3-5 times/day, doesn't record any data during the day.

I bought it directly from Garmin and yes, the firmware is up to date.

I find it a bit ridiculous for a £300+ watch.

Calling customer service tomorrow and returning it back, piece of junk.

My Forerunner 235 was going strong for 4 years, maybe frozen twice over my ownership.

Very pissed off, as I sold Forerunner already, now I need to send back this useless plastic and no device to train with... I have an upcoming race in a few months time.

Reading the comments here and seeing how long this issue is on, loosing faith in Garmin
