Messages on Garmin Explore Share not working

I am out in the mountains and I am being told that when I am sending Messages to our group's parents, they are not able to open them. Thankful they can still see our location and route.

Would it be possible that I have too much data on my Garmin? I have sent 45 message, but they have not been able to open Message since Wednesday evening (we are on a 12 day trek).

They see:

Messages 2

Waypoint 216

Tracks 244

Routes 228

Activities 3

They have cleared out their cache on their home computers, tried different map filters, and have clicked on the map to View Recent Tracks and View All Tracks.

When they click on any of the above something will open with more information, just not the Messages. We are almost at the end, but I would like to get an idea of what is causing this before our next big trek.

Thanks!

  • I doubt very much that this has anything to do with the volume of messages you have sent.

You can easily check to see what made it to the Garmin servers. Go to your account at explore.garmin.com, Inbox tab. There you will see every conversation which has made it as far as the server. If it got there, it should have (eventually) been delivered to the recipient(s).

If the recipient is an email address, there should be an email message containing a link to a web page with a map. The map shows the location from which the message was sent and allows the recipient to reply to the inReach device. The recipient needs Internet access to use the map page.

If the recipient is a mobile phone number, the message will be delivered as an SMS (text) message. Normally, the message contains a link to a map page which shows the location from which the message was sent. Unlike email, this map page does not allow for a reply. Instead, the recipient replies to the text message in the same way they would for any text message. Viewing the map page requires Internet access. Replying only requires cell service.

Typically, emails are delivered promptly. Text messages require a lot more moving parts, including third-party SMS gateways and the recipient's cell provider. There may be more delays there.

Leaving the whole MapShare mess out of it, can you be more explicit regarding what you mean by "are unable to open it"? Are you sending to individual email/SMS numbers? Are are you sending only the MapShare and expecting everybody to look there? Using MapShare this way is going to tangle you up with collections and all that stuff...

Edited to add: The only messages which are going to appear on MapShare are those which are explicitly addressed  to MapShare. That is, you must include MapShare in the recipient list.
