Failure to find Explore + for Syncing

I have tried two Mac computers and both cannot find my Explore+ device for syncing. The cable works fine for charging so presumably it is connecting OK but I want to update messages and cant. The original sync I did when I got the device worked fine.

  • The fact that the cable works for charging does not mean it's OK for data transfer. The data is on two separate pins from ground/+5. First thing to do is to try another cable. Since you're a Mac and I'm in a Windows world, I don't think I can help much beyond that.

On Windows, the sync program produces and saves a debug log. It's not really intended for consumption by mere mortals, but it is text and sometimes provides clues. No idea where you would find it on a Mac, but it lives here on Windows:

    "C:\ProgramData\Garmin\inReachSync\sync-log.txt"

If nothing else, you might search the entire drive for sync-log.txt.

Since it's a Mac, I assume you have no firewall or anti-virus software running. In a Windows world, especially if something has changed (even new AV signatures), the first thing we'd try would be to temporarily disable AV. The firewall is less likely to be an issue, so I don't usually go there.

The other thing you might do, if you have not already done it, is to wait a while and try again. Would not be the first time that the Garmin servers were at fault.
