Trip Info Out to Lunch

Just activated my device and after a few outings I find the Trip Info Data is way off. I go for a hike for 1 hour and it indicates I have a moving time of 15 minutes and moving average of 17 kph out of a 60 min trip. The only data remotely close is total distance covered. I started a new trip, left the device stationary for 15 hours and it recorded 6 km of trip distance. In comparison my 10 year old cell phone with a gps app is a 100 times more accurate. Is this typical of these devices or do I have a faulty unit?

  • Not enough info here to tell for sure. It depends on how you set the "sending" interval (track points sent by satellite in real time) and the "logging" interval (track points logged on the unit that are not sent by satellite - need to sync to send these to the server).

In particular, if you ONLY send at longish intervals (for example, 10 minutes), the trip will be made up of a few points connected by straight lines. This tends to underestimate distance. If you are logging at reasonably frequent intervals (say 1 minute), the  distance will be much closer to correct.

Leaving the device stationary with sending/logging enabled isn't a valid test. First off, the device will eventually detect that fact that it is stationary. It will automatically increase the logging interval to 4 hours. (It does check at shorter intervals to see if it "moved", in which case it reinstates the original intervals.) The apparent motion here is probably due to multipath, perhaps occasioned by changes in the constellation during such a logn interval.

You should review the map on the unit and the server to see if the points make sense for the path you walked. If so, the unit is probably fine. If not, you may want to open a support ticket.
