Aren't custom messages between Garmin devices free?

I just purchased an Explorer+ and signed up for the Freedom Safety Plan.  My understanding is that I get 10 custom messages each month. On my Explorer page, in the Stats Tiles, there is a tile that says I have sent 3 messages and received 1.  When I click on the mouse the cursor turns to a hand but nothing happens.  I thought it would show me the messages that are indicated. The only custom messages I have sent was to another Garmin device and my understanding was that these were "free."  Is that not so?  That is the only reason I bought a Garmin.  I have a friend who is profoundly hard of hearing and we hike together.  She has a Garmin too.  We decided to get Garmins so that we could communicate with each other in the event we become separated.  We communicated using our @inreach.garmin.com addresses.
