Backpack strap adapter tether - frayed into a mess

I bought the Garmin backpack strap holder and tether. Work fine but after the strap starts getting stick to the velcro a few times it doesnt take long until the tether cord is a frayed mess. Not to mention the tether just naturally falls right across the velcro taking it off to view so its actually hard to avoid. Two questions:

Any third party options? Couldn't find one.
Suitable velcro-restistant replacement? Thought about paracord but I think it would meet the same fate over time.

Dang I see what you mean, I've had the same tether for 30 minutes and it's garbage. I'm going to replace mine with some tarred seine twine, #30. #30 will fit through the slot, any bigger and I think would be a problem. Just double loop it and no worries. Velcro won't touch it.
