Sync is not working. Have tried everything. Soft reset, hard reset, firmware update, etc etc. Tried different ports, different cables. I can't afford to buy a new computer to try that also, but I did make sure my OS was up to date. Any tips? I did buy this unit second hand but I have registered it and activated the device.
  • Next thing to try is to remove and reinstall the sync program.

To suggesting anything more, we'd need details on your operating system, version, etc. In particular, is this a Mac?
  • No luck, tried that as well. I have a Windows 10 Home
  • The machine I use most frequently is Win7 Ultimate. I don't know how much of what I observe there carries over to Win10. But FWIW -

One thing you might look for, though. Seemingly at random, Win7 will decide that it needs to (re)install the Garmin drivers. I'm not sure why it sometimes wants to do this. Nor do I know what's magic about the "Garmin" drivers. In mass storage mode, it's a standard USB removable "disk" device. In any other mode, it's an HID device like a keyboard or mouse. Anyhow, the point is that when it does stop to install the drivers, the sync process usually fails because it cannot connect to the device in what it considers to be a timely manner. The solution to this on Win7 is to make sure to wait until the drivers are installed and the balloon reports "device ready to use". Then blow the sync program away and restart it. That generally works for me.

There is a debug log file which the sync program produces. However, I'm at work and I can't quote the location from memory. Its contents are pretty opaque anyhow. I hate to suggest it, but if you have anti-virus software or (particularly) any kind of network intrusion detection software running on the PC, you might try temporarily disabling it while you attempt to sync. I believe that the actual network communication (judging from the log file) is all http/https, so a normally configured firewall would not typically block the traffic.

Beyond that, I'm pretty much out of ideas other than to contact tech support.
  • Thanks for trying to help Tom. I'm not even getting the pop up balloons where my PC is recognizing a new device. Yet the Garmin is charging. Hmm. I have whatever protection running that came with the PC maybe I'll disable that.
  • Ah, the fact that it's charging is a big hint. Forgot about that part. Haven't used this model in quite a while. Now I can't remember which way it is for the SE/Explorer. If you're plugging it into the PC with it turned off, try turning it on first. If you're plugging in with it on, try doing it with it off. I am pretty sure that if it shows charging and nothing else, the PC doesn't even see it as a connected device.
  • Tried it both ways without any luck. This is driving me nuts as I bought this device to use on a trip starting saturday. Sent them an email. Will call CS tomorrow
  • Garmin customer service seems to be taking care of me! Maybe I have a defective unit. Thanks again
