  • AFAIK, there are no settings which influence SMS replies.

Did you check to see if her replies got as far as the Inbox on inreach.garmin.com? If so, it might be that you hadn't yet received the reply on the inReach. You need a clear view of the sky. In terms of message reception, the only thing that's entirely reliable is an active check - that is, a check that you initiate manually on the device. The device also checks when it sends anything, whether it's a message or sent track point. Those checks are also reliable. However, the passive checking that occurs when there is nothing to send and you don't check manually is unreliable.

If it didn't make it as far as the inbox, the problem is with the SMS gateway or your wife's cell phone provider - more likely the gateway. You don't say where you are located. Gateway providers vary by region. Not all gateways support all SMS features. It's possible that some do not support the reply function (which requires the gateway to provide the outbound cell number to the Garmin servers). In order to find details for the particular gateway, you'd have to call Garmin support.

Garmin also recently had a multi-day outage of SMS communication involving the AT&T network. Most of the complaints had to do with failure to deliver the initial message from iR to the phone, but I would imagine that replies were affected as well. That outage covered at least the weekend of September 8/9, and was not resolved until late on September 11.

Thanks for your advice, I found that to make the communication success, I have to send my message from iR to the recipient SMS & email only for the first time, then I can receive their replies, I don't know is it coincidence or my signal was weak in the first time.
