Hard case to avoid accidental SOS?

This morning I was packing my backpack. MY SE was in a front pocket powered off. Suddenly I hear something beep from the backpack. I look through it and the SE shows the SOS counter with 3 seconds left. I barely could turn it off on time. Seems something pressed the SOS button despite it being locked. This is a little disturbing because the heaviest item in the backpack was a 3 liter bladder and not much else. To avoid this happening again I am thinking about getting a hard case. Does anyone know of any that are lightweight and fit the SE? I guess it's OK if the antenna sticks out. Or is there another way to block the SOS button better?
  • First off, be sure that the button is actually LOCKED. When you lock it, you should hear/feel a distinct "click". If you don't, you haven't actually locked it. If it is locked, no amount of pressure will cause it to activate.

Secondly, there is a confirmation sequence before the SOS will actually be sent. I don't remember the details. Certainly not where the "countdown" appears in the sequence. But as long as you are paying at least minimal attention, you will have at least two chances to stop the SOS.

Still, the first line of defense is to be sure the thing is actually LOCKED.

  • About a year ago there was a firmware bug where the problem of immediately powering up without the usual arrow/check sequence was related to: Settings > Display > Auto Screen Lock. If it was turned off you would also get the immediate power up feature. I thought that was fixed.
  • Not sure, Bob. But I think that SOS can be triggered directly from a power-off state. Not positive, though, and no way to try it.
  • Yes it can be triggered with power off.  It happened to me.  Luckily I had cell phone reception and Emergency Response contacted me to confirm the emergency, and I was able to say it accidentally triggered.  I had not used the device in over 2 years.  It was in my pack, on the bottom, when I set it on the ground next to my car.  Delorme should show the lock status. And locking SHOULD WORK.

  • As noted in the 4-year-old reply, you need to be sure the lock switch is actually LOCKED. If you don't hear and feel a distinct click when you slide it, it IS NOT LOCKED.

When it is actually locked, I was unable to trigger SOS no matter how hard I pushed. That is not to say that it could not be inadvertently unlocked with enough abuse in the pack.
