Question re: Map on InReach SE+

I am new to this device. I got the SE+ because I already have GPS units and did not need the GPS routing of the Explorer.
So, as I am learning the SE+, I have a button marked "Map" I select Map and basically get nothing. No roads. It sort of looks like a topo map, but no features.
So, now I ASSUME that the SE+ does not have a "real" map in it. Only the Explorer has the map capability.
If the above is true, why do I have a "Map" button? What good is it? Maybe I am not smart enough to understand how to use it.
If the above is untrue, then I am doing something wrong. How do I get a map on the SE+?

When I downloaded the Earthmate app on my Android phone, it loaded several maps. That seems to be OK.
When my wife received a text message from me, with the link to the mapshare, she easily touched the link and got a good map with my location on the street. So that seems to work ok, too.

Thanks!
  • The inReach SE+ does not include on-device maps, nor does it do routing. It will not give you a bearing to a waypoint, nor will it follow routes built on the inreach.garmin.com web site. Those features are exclusive to the Explorer+. On the SE+, the Map screen displays a grid upon which your track will appear (if tracking). You can visually backtrack. You can mark waypoints and visually navigate to them. The SE+ also lacks the sensors (compass, altimeter, accelerometer) built into the Explorer+. Differences are described here.

If you are paired with a smart phone running the Earthmate app, you can see your position on the maps loaded into the app. If you are tracking (sending track points via the satellite network), your family and friends can see your position on your MapShare page. Any messages you send include your location. The recipient can see the location on a map which is accessible via a link in the message.

Unfortunately, the user manual for the SE+ is combined with the manual for the Explorer+. It does a really poor job of distinguishing among features available on the two devices.
