seeing additional map layers

With my new explorer+ I added 3 new map layers from the list for NA Colorado: Public Lands, Topo NA, and OpenStreet. Of these, only the first one shows on the device's map. However, it completely hides all cultural data (streets, towns, etc.) from the preloaded map. Removing it restores streets etc. For the latter two map types, there is nothing additional to see. There appears to be no option in the explorer+ menu to activate/deactivate these optional maps. The manual (woefully incomplete in how-to-use details) nor internet search turned up anything helpful for map layers. Just to be clear, this is not for Earthmate, only for the handheld.

So: how do I see both preloaded and Public Lands map data? How can I see Topo NA and OpenStreet map data?

Thanks, Bob
  • You probably already know this, but I can't tell for sure because you say there is no option to to "activate/deactivate these optional maps". From the map page, Menu > Manage Maps. From the Manage Maps screen, use up/down to select the map you want to activate/deactivate. Use left to select the check box. Press check mark to check/uncheck the box. Then X back to the map to see the effect of the change.

In most areas, it is difficult to tell the difference between TNA and OSM. It appears that the device is smart enough to know that these two map types display essentially the same information. If both are selected, it only displays TNA. (Yes, that's counterintuitive if you assume that the layers are listed on Manage Maps with the topmost layer first. Nonetheless...).

I am unfamiliar with the public lands maps. It is possible that these are raster maps, meaning that they are not transparent - so they don't show layers "underneath". It is also possible that it depends on the zoom level. Not all map types are available at all zoom levels. If you have not already done so, you should experiment to see what is visible at which zoom levels. This is especially the important with TNA/OSM vs. the worldwide base map.
  • Tom, your explanation needs to be in the user manual! It's as you say - the Public Lands map (in my case BLM) was hiding most of the cultural info (but not all, depends on zoom level and location). The other maps probably dupe each other, makes sense. I'll find out as I travel to other places. Also, I did not know to "left arrow to map checkbox, select/deslect with check button". Many sequences on the inreach are not very intuitive but do take some practice; this kind of detail should be published and accessible.
