Confused about Freedom Billing costs re tracking

I have an Inreach Explorer that I only use in the winter, so I suspend service from March until December.
I wanted to reactivate my Freedom (Recreation ) plan but I "think" the terms have changed.
Can anyone confirm how Garmin charge for the tracking points? It says "unlimited tracking at 10 minute intervals or longer" Is that based on me setting the log points or how often I send those log points?
  • This is based on the "sent log point" tracking interval. You adjust this in settings on the device. As far as I can tell, the terms have not changed. The "10 minutes+" shown for tracking interval is just to let you know that the recreation plan limits you to intervals of 10 minutes or more. You won't be able to set it to less than that. Only the Extreme plan allows tracking down to 2 minute intervals.

The above is for US plans. If you are outside the US, YMMV.
  • Can anyone confirm how Garmin charge for the tracking points for the Canadian plans ? Is that based on me setting the log points or how often I send those log points?

    Thank's
  • I don't think Canadian plans are any different than the others with regard to how points are counted. The specifics of how many track points per month are included with each plan level may differ.

On the inReach, you have control over how frequently track points are sent. The minimum interval does vary by plan. But the counting is all the same. Garmin counts each track point sent. For example, suppose you set the device to send a track point every 10 minutes. 10 minutes is the minimum interval for most plans. You start tracking. You track for 1 hour. All other things being equal, the unit will send 6 track points during that hour. You will be charged for 6 track points.

Note that the intervals are not entirely precise, so you can't count on exactly 6 points per hour at 10 minute intervals. In addition, the unit sends one more point when you stop tracking, even if the required interval is not up. This is a safety feature. When you are no longer tracking, your sent track points will reflect your last known position.

In addition, the unit automatically senses when you have stopped moving. It increases the send interval to 4 hours until you begin moving again. That way, you don't waste sent points - or battery - while you're stopped for a break.
  • Thank you very much TWOLPERT for the clarity and speed of your answer! That answers my questions.
