Moving from eTrex to Explorer+

I just picked up my new Explorer+ at REI today. I've had a couple of eTrex devices for the last 15 or so years, so I was anxious to see what the new device could do.

My main reason for switching from an eTrex 30 to an Explorer+ is the satellite messaging. Before, I had a SPOT to let my wife know I was OK, but the SPOT subscription prices keep going up and up. Plus, it's a one-way device: I can send a pre-recorded message, but she can't send anything to me. I liked the idea of an Explorer+ with a monthly subscription that I will only activate during the months that I'm active (July-Sept).

Now, the drawbacks to the Explorer+, as I see them today:

1. My vast library of tpo files are no longer compatible with the new Explorer+. I can import gpx files into the online app and then sync with the handheld, but I'll still use NatlGeo Topo to plan routes because it has a great profile feature. I'll use GPSBabel to convert the tpo files to gpx, but it only converts waypoints, not routes.

2. The eTrex had a very handy feature that I used a lot: the alarm clock. I especially liked the way I could set an alarm, then turn the unit off. It would wake me in the morning, and I'd be ready for the day. Maybe someone can come up with an app to add an alarm to the Explorer+.

3. The Explorer+ only charges through the USB port. My eTrex used AA batteries, and I always kept a spare set in my backpack. I'll have to learn to keep a charged Mophie with me in case the battery goes down.

What do other people think about the new unit?
