I took a while to buy the InReach Explorer, previously I've owned a Pn60-w which had a number of issues so I was wary and of course I did read a number of worrying reviews. It took so long for me to open my wallet that by the time I did the new versions with the better mapping screens came out. Despite having the opportunity to buy the new version I decided to go for the original Explorer, primarily because it's a little lighter and I assume has a longer battery life due to a smaller screen. I want my device primarily as a safety tool, so again I felt I could cope with the small screen. Also if I'm in a situation where I can use my ipad I'll pair it with Earthmate and use my own mapping app on the ipad.
Yesterday I set up the InReach, I'm not particularly tech savvy but quite frankly it was very easy. I remember reading a review stating that ''it's so difficult to set up my IT team struggled all day''. Certainly not difficult for me! After choosing a plan and activating the InReach I uploaded all my waypoints, I simply saved a Google Earth folder of KML files and uploaded them to the Garmin Explore website. I didn't realize when I bought the device that it was limited to only 500 waypoints in a route, but this hasn't seemed to be a problem. I split a route into a series of sections as a workaround - simple enough. I'm a little unsure why my device seems to work with more than 5 routes as I thought this was the maximum (perhaps new firmware allowed more?)
I sent out a message and asked the recipient to return a message, all worked well. I even received the message when the InReach had a limited view of the sky.
All in all I'm really happy, in fact i wish I'd bought one years ago. Thanks to those who helped me with various silly questions prior to my purchase.
