Waypoints and Mapshare

A question about waypoints: As I am setting up my mapshare, I am seeing it would be possible for others to view my waypoints. From what I am seeing waypoints do not incur an additional fee with the freedom plan. Would this be true, or would showing my waypoints on mapshare count as sending my location? Additionally, would anyone know if these waypoints would be available for view in real-time as I mark them on my inReach?

  • At one time, waypoints marked on iR devices were sent in real time to the Garmin servers. I believe that "navigation events" (starting navigation on the device) were uploaded as well. AFAIK, this feature has not worked in some years. If you want details, open a support ticked.

And yeah, I know that various pieces of marketing smoke and documentation still mention this feature.

On Explore app compatible inReach devices, like the inReach Mini 2, waypoints marked in the field do not upload via Iridium satellite and instead must be synced through the Explore app. For more information, reference the following article from our Support Center - Setting Up MapShare for an inReach Mini 2.
