Why not messenger app in mini 1?

Dear folks : As question says ?

why not Garmin update the Mini1 firmware to make it compatible with messenger app and Explore app?

planned obsolescence ? ...I can not believe that it has a Hardware limitation like multi gnss has.
Any has news if it will be added?
Thanks to all
  • I hope they never will do this, as then the Mini1 becomes useless brick and I will ask Garmin for refund of the money

imagine you have an professional account and have some let say 50 devices to dispatch for mission. With devices which do not work without phone, you will need to set up the phone app 50 times, you will need go through the pairing process 50 times...

you will never finish the work

with cable sync, you need abt 1min for each device

if you deperately need something which does not work without phone, get one of the newer devices and suffer

BTW: mini1 does work with phone, you just need to get the earthmate

I wonder how many percent of total inReach devices are used by a professional account?

It sounds impressive that a customer has 50 Garmin devices, but I expect that skyeye’s use case and problems are a vanishing small selection of total inReach users – thus, prioritized accordingly by Garmin.

  • According to backpackinglight.com (they got the answer below from Garmin):

"The first generation Mini was launched in 2018 and has some hardware limitations that prevent us from bringing it forward to new apps like the Explore app and the Messenger app. The inReach Mini still works as designed with the Earthmate app for messaging, tracking, safety, planning and navigating, it’s just not able to take advantage of the internet messaging features found in the Garmin Messenger app."

  • Thanks to all for answering, Yes in fact I an very happy with cable sync ,

it takes only a minute to get the unit ready.

I was not aware that Mini 2 must have a phone to do this.

I think that if Mini 1 has hardware limits , I will stay in Earthmate .

thanks to all for taking time to help

  • there are many such customers, as earlier Delorme products were in this field number one choice. After this was bought by Garmin, problems started.

Today we would definitely not choose Garmin again, but an other supplier with more flexibility and transparent operation. But it is not easy to transfer to other provider. Devices and users are scattered worldwide, to replace all needs lot of manpower thus costs. We would have to replace our 165 devices and over 200 users to the new system, create new manuals, organize training courses and set up maintenance system for all this.

There are many organizations for whom tracking is mandatory. For example UN. At least vehicles may not move unless having tracking on.

We solve this partially by having installed tracking in our own vehicles (not Garmin), but if we use not own vehicles, we use personal tracking instead, giving us an extra flexibility.
