New personal account with already activated IMEI

For a canoe trip to Sweden I have borrowed a Garmin inReach from a friend. He has deactivated his account but I am not able - at least I cannot find a way to - to register myself for a new personal account with the IMEI of my friend´s device. When trying to creat my own account i got in step 1 of the procedure the error message: this device is already activated.

Is there a solution to solve this issue?

Thanks and best regards

Matthias

  • There are specific instructions for cleaning a device prior to sale. This article is for a different device, but the same steps apply.

    https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=Mot3ht8UMb31d93oYWCni5

You can do the factory reset yourself. But the original owner must cancel service. And there must be sufficient time for the cancellation to take effect. It's not clear to me when (or if) the current owner must include the "Send a Cancellation Request" step.

Note that Garmin WILL NOT deactivate an existing account at the request of the new owner. The original owner must do this.

Also note that there is no provision for "lending" or "borrowing" a device and using it with a new account. The steps above are for permanent transfer of ownership.
