How to share mapshare link with filters matching what I set

I want to share Mapshare link to friends with the filters matching what I set on the social page before sending them th elink.  So that when they click the link they see my location and track that I want them to see.   What is happening now is:

1.  I go to Social tab, and set Mapshare to ON, and Filter settings to a starting date such as 1/6/2020.   Hoping that the receiver will click the link in their mail and see all tracks from 1/6/2020.

2.  Then I send a link to an email address.   The receiver clicks on the link and sees Mapshare with "Filters ON" and set to recent tracks.   Then they have to click another link so show all tracks to basically turn off the filter.    I don't understand why they don't see the same filter setting as I set before I sent them the link.

So the issue I am trying to solve is why I set the filter to 1/6/2020 or any other setting in the Social page, but the receiver always gets the link with filter set to recent tracks.

Help appreciated.

Thanks,
Don

  • I'm not sure what the question is. All the links are the same - the link itself does not convey any information other than URL of the MapShare page. Any user who accesses your MapShare page should see your most recent filter setting, whatever it was.

If you really saved the filter settings (from the Social tab at explore.garmin.com, Filter MapShare Data button) AND users see something other than your MOST RECENT filter setting, then it's bug. Open a support ticket.

  • Thank you for the clear answer.   You are describing exactly what I am seeing, the users see a different filter setting than I have set.   No matter what filter setting I have set, including turning all filters off, they always see filters on to recent tracks.  So it's a bug.  I'll open a support ticket.

  • I was able to reach a Gamin help chat.   According to them this is not a bug but is the default setting, and it is working as it should.   That's news to me and I'm sure it has not worked that way in the past.     I'd be really curious if someone else could test this answer and see if when you share Mapshare it defaults to filters set to Most Recent track.    Below is the answer from Garmin.

  • You might ask them to escalate this. Historically, this restriction meant exactly what it (still) says. The MapShare viewer should not be able to override your selection here.

OTOH, this is not meant to be a "security" thing. It is JUST a filter. So they can rationally make the argument above.

For security purposes, you would need to password-protect the MapShare page. You do this through the MapShare Settings button on the Social tab.

  •  Hello, all mapshare pages when shared will always refer to the most recent track option this is so that it will always show the most recent track that was done. This was an intentional change so viewers of the mapshare page do not have to sort through a list of tracks to try and find the current track that is happening. This probably will not be changed.

Your filter mapshare settings will still apply but it is for the amount of data that is shown on your mapshare page. Essentially its the filter you set on your account of what data you want viewers to be able to see, but the actual mapshare page when viewiing it allows users to filter the data you've allowed them to see. It is not to set the actual ffilter that is on the page when its loaded.

You are talking about two separate filter types. 1. For the data you allow viewers to see from your account. 2. To filter the data that is showing on the mapshare page.

  • Thanks for the reply.   OK, so the default filter when they open the link is "most recent track".   It's not what I prefer but at least its clear that this is intentional and not something I'm doing wrong.    Based on your answer,  I can set the mapshare filter to a specific date so that when they click on "all tracks" on the mapshare screen they will see all the tracks from the set date onward (which will be my trip start date in my case) .  Right?    If that's the case, then this will work fine.  Thanks for responding.
