No location link received from another device message when both units only in satellite reception.

Two buddies loose each other in the desert.

NO MOBILE PHONE CELL RANGE OR RECEPTION for either.
Both have inreach units, both Bluetoothed individually to their phones.
One sends a message to the other to track each other down, messages received do not have green icon location link to identify where the message was sent from.

How do I locate my buddy when separated in remote locations?

  • If you sent the message from the app (rather than from the device), be sure that the "pin" icon to the left of the text entry box is "enabled". For some odd reason, the app allows you to suppress the location.

Either way, be sure that the Mini has a fix before you send. When you send from the device, it warns you if it does not have a fix. Be sure to choose "wait for GPS". Do not choose "send anyway". The latter results in a message with no location.

I do not remember whether or not the app pays attention to whether the device has a fix. If you send from the app, I don't know if it will force the device to wait for a fix.

  • I’m familiar with the location link send icon, it warns you that you have disabled location send.
I’ve never disabled this and it’s always on.
I’ve also sent many messages (over the last 3 years) however never noticed any option to send anyway without a fix. This I’ve never seen.

  • The prompt to wait for GPS/send anyway only occurs if you try to send when the unit does not have a fix. I know it works that way when sending directly from the device. I don't know what happens if you try to send from the app without a fix.

If you are sure you did everything correctly, open a support ticket.

  • Just to be clear, is this inReach mini 1 or 2?

Secondly, if you send a message from one in reach that has a number of contacts - one being another in reach device, one being SMS and one email, do any of those people get the location?
