What Constitutes a Tracking Point?

I thought tracking points were just the "send interval" and you were charged .10$ per point on the Safety plan. However, my exploe.garmin home page shows that I have sent 2 "tracking points" even though I have had send interval set to never.

What else constitutes as a tracking point? (Does sending a reference point count?)

Also, my inreach shows I have used 8/10 monthly messages but my explore.garmin home page shows 6/10 even though I have synced everything. Any reason why? Which number is correct?

Thank you.

In my experience, none of the data on explore.garmin.com "adds up" to what actually happened. At best, there are time lags. At worst, the data is just wrong. The data on the device should be accurate.

Note: If you enabled tracking ("sending points") even briefly, you probably generated 2 track points. The unit will send one as soon as you enable tracking. It will normally send another (with your "final" location) when you stop tracking. This happens even if tracking was not on long enough to cover even one send interval.

I am not sure what you mean by "send a reference point". If you mean "location request", it's not the same as a tracking point but it is charged the same way ($0.10 US) on the safety plan. If you mean "send an iR message with my location", that is charged like any other message.

The main thing to remember is that you are going to be charged - somehow - for anything the device sends. This includes track points, responses to location requests (which are generated by people using MapShare), original messages, replies to messages you receive, and so forth.

  • Some weather request consume a message (the detailed wether I believe, not the basic weather). Also you can send points manually without activating the send interval, so maybe you did that a few time.

  • read you question again - yes a reference point is a tracking point - basically anytime you send a location via Iridum it is. Makes sense.

Also you have a limited number of test messages included per month - if you do more I think they are charged as messages.

  • Pre-set messages are free on all plans.
