Texting Coordinates to InReach Mini

If a cell phone sends an SMS to my InReach Mini with a coordinate such as "33° 0' 00.00" N, -113° 0' 00.00 W" am I able to NAVIGATE to that point on the InReach?

I know when another InReach sends me a text with a location I can select the message and select "Navigate" but am I able to do that if it did not originate from an InReach? Or is my only option to copy down the coordinates to a piece of paper, then create a waypoint on the InReach, and edit the coordinates?

Thank you

  • Short answer - no, you cannot navigate to coordinates contained in an SMS message originating on a cell phone and sent to your Mini.

Long answer - You CAN do this with a "send location" message generated on another iR device and sent to your iR device. In the case of the message from the phone, the coordinates are "just some more text" in the body of the message. The device has no way to know that the message contains a location. Let alone pick the coordinates out of the text. In the case of the location message from another iR device, the receiving device knows that the message contains a location. And understands how to extract the location from the message.

The presentation of the two messages on the receiving iR device may be similar. (I don't actually remember what a location message looks like.) But it device definitely recognizes the location message as such.

  • You can always read the message and type the coordinates yourself in a new waypoint. Easier to do on the Earthmate map and send the the MINI but I think can also be done on the mini - the typing part is then very tedious however.
